Week Commencing 23rd April 2018

 

English: This week in English we will be continuing with our myth writing. Children will be looking at the myth from last week and identifying what each paragraph is about before creating their own mythical creature and beginning to write their own myth.

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at different forms of representing data - tally, bar charts and pictograms. Children will be interpreting data before creating their own chart at the end of the week.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children should complete the sheet recapping fronted adverbials.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Gold spellings this week.

 

Week Commencing 16th April 2018

 

English: In English this week we will be recapping basic grammatical features such as full stops, capital letters, commas, question marks and exclamation marks. Towards the end of the week, we will begin our myth writing topic by creating a story map about Finn McCool and the Giants Causeway.

 

Maths: In maths we will be working on the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. We will begin by counting squares around the outside of shapes before moving on to using rulers to measure and calculate perimeter.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children have been asked to write a postcard to school about their holidays.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Unit 11 words this week.

 

Week Commencing 19th February 2018

 

English: This week we will be loooking at the features of a letter and thinking about what our leeters will need to include.

 

Maths: In maths this week we will be starting to look at time. We will begin by reminding the children about hours, half past and o'clock before moving on to 5-minute intervals and then more accurately using both analogue and digital times.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children should complete a fact file about Stone Henge.

 

Spellings: This week children will be tested on Silver spellings.

 

Week Commencing 12th March 2018

 

English: In English this week we will be introducing the author Anthony Browne. We will be looking at a selection of his books and the messages in them.

 

Maths: In maths we will continue looking at scales and conversions, reading scales for mass in kilograms and grams.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, homework this week is to write a book review about a favourite book.

 

 

 

Week commencing 5th March 2018

 

English: This week, children will begin their unit of work called ‘Authors and Letters’. Children will be identifying the purpose and features of letters and will begin to look at some amazing books written and illustrated by Anthony Browne. Bywell Book Day has been rescheduled for this Friday.

 

Maths: This week the children will be introduced to mass. They will be reading scales by identifying what the intervals represent. They will also be learning how many grams are in 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 of 1kg.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Silver spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 26th February 2018

 

English: This week, in our English lessons children will be focussing on our class novel The BFG. They will be answering questions to show understanding and writing a postcard to a friend at the orphanage from Sophie’s perspective. On Friday, we will be celebrating Bywell Book Day by carrying out activities based on the picture book Cave Baby.

 

Maths: This week the children will be focusing on mental arithmetic and reasoning.

 

On Thursday it is Science Day. Children will be taking part in a range of exciting investigations.

 

Homework: Over half term, children were given the task of building a model of a Stone Age home.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Silver spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 12th February 2018

 

English: This week, children will be carrying out their reading, spelling and grammar assessments. We will also be looking at the poem 'A Journey Through the Stone Age'. We will identify the pattern of rhyme, carry out some role play and write some verses of our own, following the same pattern of rhyme.

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at the different types of angles: right, acute, obtuse and straight. Children will program Bee-Bots to explore right angle turns and will also carry out an angle hunt in the playground.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve fraction problems.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Silver spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 5th February 2018

 

English: This week, we will be focussing on reading comprehension. We will be looking at fiction and non-fiction texts, learning strategies to answer different types of questions, forming model answers together and then having a go ourselves. This will help to prepare the children for their reading assessment next week.

 

Maths: This week we will continue looking at fractions and will be recognising the relationship between fractions and division. We will be linking the pictorial method that we have become familiar with to mentally solving fraction problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to write a story about falling in to a hole and waking up in an unfamiliar place.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 7 spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 29th January 2018

 

English: Children will be carrying out their unaided writing assessment at the end of this week, using the skills they learnt last week to write a suspenseful piece. They will begin the week by collecting a bank of vocabulary which will help them with their writing. They will then use this vocabulary to build some sentences and focus on improving these by using different openers, powerful vocabulary and extending using conjunctions.

 

Maths: The week we will be looking at fractions again, moving on to fractions of amounts. We will be using practical and pictorial methods to find unit and non-unit fractions of amounts then moving on to solving fraction problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve maths reasoning problems.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 6 spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 22nd January 2018

 

English: Children will be continuing their rewrite of'Stone Age Boy' from the point of view of Om. This week, we will focus on suspense writing. We will talk about building up to events gradually, using suspenseful phrases and short, sharp sentences to make the reader feel nervous and desperate to find out more.

 

Maths: The week we will be focussing on problem solving and reasoning. The children will be learning and using key strategies to support them with this.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to write about a hunting scene using exciting vocabulary.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 6 spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 15th January 2018

 

English: Children will be continuing their work on 'Stone Age Boy'. This week, they will begin rewriting the story from the point of of Om (the original story is told from the point of view of the boy). We will be doing some shared and independent writing. The focus will be to describe what was taking place when Om showed the boy around her camp using powerful verbs and adverbs as well as conjunctions such as whilst, while, as and meanwhile to link ideas.

 

Maths: The week we will begin to look at fractions, identifying what halves, quarters, thirds and eighths are and understanding what they represent.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to divide numbers using the bar method.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze and Silver spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 8th January 2018

 

Happy new year! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful break and are looking forward to a term full of fun and exciting learning.

 

English: Children will be looking at the story 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. They will begin the week by using clues from the front cover and blurb to make a prediction about what will happen in the story. Once we have read the book, the children will identify the key events and retell the story in their own words. Towards the end of the week, the children will be imagining and writing down the thoughts of characters.

 

Maths: This week, we will be dividing larger numbers by using physical resources such as Numicon and counters and will then be moving on to applying this to the bar method of division.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday. We will then be sending out the Silver spellings which we will begin testing from next week.

 

 

Week commencing 11th December 2017

 

This week is assessment week. Children will be carrying out their reading, spelling, grammar and maths assessments.

 

Week commencing 4th December 2017

 

English: This week, children will be continuing with instructions. They will create a Christmassy snowglobe for which they will then plan and write instructions, as part of their unaided writing.

 

Maths: This week, children will be dividing using counters and Numicon resources.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children have been given a set of instructions that are in the wrong order. They need to rewrite them in the correct order, using time phrases for each one.

 

 

 

Week commencing 27th November 2017

 

English: This week, children will begin their unit of work on instruction texts. They will be identifying the features and putting a set of instructions in chronological order. They will then decorate a biscuit which they will write instructions for later in the week. They will collect a range of imperative verbs and write an attention grabbing introduction for their set of instructions.

 

Maths: This week, children will be continuing with multiplication and will be learning how to use the grid method to multiply two and three digit numbers by a one digit number.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children have been given a set of multiplication questions for which they need to use the grid method to solve. This is to give them a head start with their Maths learning for this week.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 3 spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 20th November 2017

 

English: This week, children will be writing their own version of the story Billy's Bucket, which we have titled Bertie's Box. They will continue working on the rules of speech as they will need to include speech in their story.

 

Maths: This week, children will be applying focusing on times table recall (2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10) and will also be solving times table problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to add the correct speech punctuation to given sentences.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 13th November 2017

 

English: Children will continue with their work on "Billy's Bucket" this week. They will be using the structure and ideas from the story to plan a story of their own. They will also be learning the rules for speech and will practise how to use speech punctuation (inverted commas) correctly.

 

Maths: This week, children will be applying their knowledge of adding and subtracting using partitioning, by solving addition and subtraction word problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve subtraction calculations.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 2 spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 6th November 2017

 

English: Children will be looking at the story of "Billy's Bucket", identifying the key events and carrying out some role play as well as using a story map to retell the story.

 

Maths: This week, children will be subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers using the partitioning method. They will then move on to understanding addition and subtraction as inverses and using this knowledge to find missing numbers in addition and subtraction number sentences.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to use conjunctions to create compound sentences.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 30th October 2017

 

English: This week we will be focusing on what a good sentence looks like, remembering to include capital letters and full stops. We will also be looking at compound sentences and will be using simple conjunctions to join two ideas.

 

Maths: This week, children will be identifying and naming 2D and 3D shapes and describing their properties. They will also have the opportunity to create a model of a 3D shape.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to look around their home to find shapes.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday. Don't forget to practise the spellings for the Spelling Bee too! This will be held on Monday for year 3 children.

 

Week commencing 16th October 2017

 

English: This week is assessment week. Children will be carrying out reading, spelling and grammar assessments.

 

Maths: We will begin the week by learning how to double numbers by partitioning. The children will then be carrying out their Maths Assessment.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to read an extract from a story and answer related questions.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 1 spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 9th October 2017

 

English: Children will be carrying out their unaided writing assessment for which they will have to write a setting description for a haunted house. They will need to remember to use adjectives, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions which they have learnt about in previous weeks.

 

Maths: This week we are looking at subtraction. Children will begin the week by mentally subtracting one digit numbers from two and three digit numbers, then moving on to subtracting multiples of 10. Towards the end of the week, children will be subtracting two and three digit numbers using a number line.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve addition problems using the partitioning method that they have been taught.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spelling set on Friday.

 

Week commencing 2nd October 2017

 

English: Children will be continuing their work on story settings, moving on to describing a park setting. They will be collecting verbs and adverbs to use in their writing towards the end of the week, also remembering to include adjectives and positional prepositions from the previous weeks' learning. A trip to the park this weekend would be super helpful! You can discuss with your child what they can see, hear, smell and feel whilst you are there.

 

Maths: Children will be focusing on addition this week. They will begin by using a number line to add two and three digit numbers and then will move on to learning and using the partitioning method.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to read a setting description and draw what is being described.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spelling set on Friday.

 

Week commencing 25th September 2017

 

English: This week's focus will be to describe a woods setting using their senses. Children will begin the week by exploring the wooded area of the playground and describing what they can see, hear, feel and smell. They will focus on writing sentences which include positional prepositions (e.g. beneath, next to, near, above) as well as adjectives which we learnt about last week.

 

Maths: Children will be finding 10 more and 10 less, and 100 more and 100 less than given number. They will then move on to mentally adding single digit numbers on to two and three digit numbers. They will explore and share the mental methods that they use to do this. They will then move on to mentally adding multiples of 10 and 100 on to two and three digit numbers

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to identify the value of each digit in two and three digit numbers.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 18th September 2017

 

English: Children will begin their work on story settings. They will use picture clues to identify a setting then discuss why a setting is important in a story and which features writers use to make settings come alive for a reader. They will collect expanded noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun e.g. immense, sapphire lake) to use in a short descriptive paragraph about a castle setting.

 

Maths: Children will be continuing their work on place value.  They will be reading and writing numbers up to 1000, comparing and ordering numbers, estimating where numbers can be placed on numberlines and counting in multiples of 50 and 100.

 

Homework:  Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to rewrite sentences with capital letters and full stops used correctly.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday. These were sent out with their homework and can also be downloaded from our class page.

 

Week commencing 11th September 2017

 

English: Children will be learning about when to use capital letters and full stops in a sentence and will also be writing a recount about our trip to Cannon Hall Farm.

 

Maths: Children will begin their work on place value. They will startthe week by representing numbers using Base 10 equipment. They will then move on identifying the value of each digit in two and three digit numbers and partioning numbers to understand what they are made up of.

 

Homework:  Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to draw a picture and write some sentences about their first week at Bywell.
