Week Commencing 3/12/18

English

In English this week we will be creating our unaided writting assessment. Pupils will be writing a diary entry as if they are the Highwayman visiting Bess in the Old Inn Yard. Pupils have been well prepared for this and we are looking forward to seeing the writing the pupils create.

Maths

This week in Maths we will be focussing on shape. We will look at identifying and classifying 2D shapes based on their properties. We will also be developing a much deeper understanding of angles and solving problems based on this theme

Week Commencing 26/11/18

English

This week in English we will be analysing Bess' charater profile from the Highwayman. We will be looking at a range of different language types and truly coming to terms with Bess' thoughts feelings and emotions.

Maths

In Maths this week we will be focussing on the Formal Written Method for multiplication. Pupils will need to continue to practise their multiplication tables at home in order to be successful this week.

 

 

Week Commencing 19/11/18

English

This week in English we will be looking at building a character profile for the Highwayman, understanding the different aspects of his personality and how this affects those around him.

Maths

This week in Maths we will studying the formal written method for multiplication. Pupils need to have a good understanding of multiplication tables in order to be successful this week.  

 

 

 

Week Commencing 5/11/18

English

This week in English we will be looking at The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We will be learning about the features of the poem and understanding a range of old English vocabulary. By the end of the week pupils should have a good understanding of the poem and be able to answer a range of deep, high order questions.

Maths

This week in Maths we will be focussing on the formal written method for division. We will begin the week be exploring the idea of division through practical apparatus. We will then move onto using the form written method (bus stop method) to answer a range of questions and word problems.

Week Commencing 15/10/18

This week will be our assessment week where by pupils will sit half term assessments to demonstrate what they have learned of the course of the past 6 weeks. Pupils are well prepared for these test. The assessments will cover spelling, grammar, mathematics, writing and reading.

 

Week commencing 08/10/18

Maths

This week in Maths, we will be using the expanded method for subtraction leading up to using the compact method with brdiging to the end of the week.

English

This week we will be focussing on character descriptions from our class novel 'Shadow Forest', using a range of sentnece types to develop our writing. In our grammar sessions we will be looking at homophones and relative clause sentneces.

Week Commencing 01/10/18

Maths

This week in Maths we will be focussing on using the compct fromal method for addition and subtraction involving bridging. This will be an impotant skills for the children to understand as they will use this method for many years to come.

English

In English this week we will be focussing on setting description. Collecting key vocabulary with the aim to describe a particular setting in detail. This will help the children when it comes to creating their unaided write at the end of the year.

 

Week Commencing 24/09/18

Maths 

During Maths this week we will be focusing on using the expanded column method for addition and subtraction. This will follow on from our previous week of adding and subtracting mentally. The skills pupils learn this week will be essential for next week as we progress to the formal written method. 

English 

During English this week we will be focussing on speech. We will be punctuating speech accuratley using the 5 stages of speech whilst also interweving speech and narrative. This will form an effective technique for pupil's unaided write at the end of the half term.

Homework- Homework this week will aim to consolodate pupil understanding of speech and the expanded method for addition and subtraction.

Week Commencing 17/09/18

Maths

This week in Maths we will be covering addition and subtraction using mental methods. We will start by adding and subtraction numbers using Base 10 and pictorial representations moving onto thinking independently using particular mental techniques.

English

This week in English we will be focussing on character descriptions in our new book 'Shadow Forest' by Matt Haig. We will be collecting vocabulary and thinking deeply about why a particular character may behave a certain way. By the end of the week we will create an unaided piece of writing based on a wanted poster for Aunt Eda (A main character in the story) We have lots of fun activities planned in English this week, so keep checking the class page to see what we have been getting up to.

 

Week Commencing 10/09/18 

Maths 

This week in Mathematics, we will be focussing on rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000. We will be starting the week by using Base 10 resources to cement our understanding before moving onto representing rounding through pictorial represetations then moving onto rounding with numbers and word problems.

 English 

In English this week, we will be focussing on a number of grammar aspects including using effective sentnece openers, using adjectives appropriatley and understanding sentence structures. This will set pupils in good stead for the beggining of Year 5. 

Homework ~
Homework for Maths will be the consolidation of the rounding strategy covered in class, whilst English will be to consoldate a particular type of grammar skill along with Bronze spellings in preperation for the test on Firday.
