Week Commencing 26/06/18

 

This week is our assessment week when children will be carrying out their final Year 3 assessments in reading, spelling, grammar and maths.

 

Week Commencing 18/06/18

 

English: This week in English the chidlren will be continuing to write their Beast Quest adventure story. We will be collecting vocabulary for and then writing the middle part of the story using descriptive language to write about our character Alex's journey through Avantia.

 

Maths: Revision week in maths this week. Children will be revising prior knowledge and answering a variety of mathematical problems, in preperation for assessments next week.

 

This week is Sports Week. Our Year 3s will be spending Tuesday outside for an Active Play day. Everyone will have a go at zorbing, bungee trampolines, an inflatable assault course, go karts and huge outdoor games! On Thursday it is our Sports Day. Year 3 and 4 in the morning so parents are more than welcome to come and cheer the childern on!

 

Week Commencing 11/06/18

 

English: This week in English, we are going to be strting to write our own Beast Quest style adventure story. Children will begin the week by collecting vocabulary and describing a Beast, before using the story Ferno the Fire Dragon as a scaffold for writing the beginning of their own story.

 

Maths: This week in maths our focus in going to be on recapping division. We will be recapping the bar method of division and using it to divide larger, three digit numbers. We will end the week dividing numbers by 10 and 100.

 

Week Commencing 04/06/18

 

English: We will begin the week by looking at subordinate and embedded clauses, what they are and how they are used in sentences. We will then move on to our new topic and children will be asked to make predictions about a book using different clues.

 

Maths: In maths this week our focus will be on multiplication. We will begin the week by recapping the grid method before moving on to using this method to solve problems involving multiplication. We will end the week multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children have been given times table practice to complete over the holidays.

 

Week Commencing 21/05/18

 

English: In this week's English we will begin by finishing off our non-chronological reports that we started at the end of last week. After this, children will be completing their half-termly assessments in reading, spelling and grammar.

 

Maths: As well as completing their half-termly assessments, this week in maths children will solve missing number problems using their learning from the last two weeks. They will also solve a maths themed Royal Wedding mystery at the end of the week. 

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, this week children have been given a Royal Wedding themed reading comprehension to complete.

 

Spellings: This week, children will be tested on their Bronze, Silver and Gold words on Friday.

 

Week Commencing 14/05/18

 

English: This week in English we are going to use what we learnt about non-chronological reports last week, alongside what we have been learning about the Roman Empire to write our own non-chronological report about the Roman Empire. Children will begin by organising information in to categories, before planning their report and writing towards the end of the week.

 

Maths: This week's maths will focus on subtraction. We will be using the partitioning method to subtract 3 digit numbers before using this knowledge to find missing numbers in addition and subtraction problems towards the end of the week. 

 

Homework: This week's homework is Royal Wedding themed. We are asking the children to design and make their own crown to wear at Friday's Royal Wedding party!

 

Week Commencing 07/05/18

 

English: In English this wek we will be introducing non-chronological reports. We will be looking at a variety of reports and identifying the common features before beginning to write our own report about the Birtish Army during WW2 as a class and then independently.

 

Maths: In maths this week will be revisiting addition of 3 digit numbers using the partitioning method. Children will begin the week by recapping the method before using it to solve different types of problems involving crossing Tens and Hundreds.

 

Homework: Due in by Wedneday. In preperation for our maths focus this week, children have been given addition problems to solve using the partitioning method.

 

 

Week Commencing 30/04/18

 

English: This week in English children will be planning to write their very own myth. We are going to be taking aspects of Finn McCool and the Giants Causeway to help us with this as well as including faantastic vocabulary, adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions.

 

Maths: We are continuing to work with money this week. Children will be using their knowledge to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of amounts of money.

 

Week Commencing 23/04/18

 

English: This week in English we will be continuing with our myth writing topic. Children will be boxing up the myth from last week before creating their own mythical creature and beginning to write their own myth.

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at different forms of representing data - tally, bar charts and pictograms. Children will be interpreting data before creating their own chart at the end of the week.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children should complete the sheet recapping fronted adverbials.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Gold spellings this week.

 

Week Commencing 16/04/18

 

English: In English this week we will be recapping basic grammatical features such as full stops, capital letters, commas, question marks and exclamation marks. Towards the end of the week, we will begin our myth writing topic by creating a story map about Finn McCool and the Giants Causeway.

 

Maths: In maths we will be working on the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. We will begin by counting squares around the outside of shapes before moving on to using rulers to measure and calculate perimeter.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children have been asked to write a postcard to school about their holidays.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Unit 11 words this week.

 

Week Commencing 19/02/18

 

English: This week we will be loooking at the features of a letter and thinking about what our leeters will need to include.

Maths: In maths this week we will be starting to look at time. We will begin by reminding the children about hours, half past and o'clock before moving on to 5-minute intervals and then more accurately using both analogue and digital times.

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children should complete a fact file about Stone Henge.

Spellings: This week children will be tested on Silver spellings.

 

Week Commencing 12/03/18

 

English: In English this week we will be introducing the author Anthony Browne. We will be looking at a selection of his books and the messages in them.

 

Maths: In maths we will continue looking at scales and conversions, reading scales for mass in kilograms and grams.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, homework this week is to write a book review about a favourite book.

 

Week Commencing 05/03/18

 

English: This week in English we will begin our letters and authors topic. The children will begin the week by looking at a variety of letters and discussing their similarities before exploring their features. Towards the end of the week we will begin to look at books by the author Anthony Browne.

 

Maths: In maths this week we will be looking at reading scales to determine the mass of abjects. Children will look at a variety of scale, working out the intervals for each before using this to read the mass. 

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Unit 9 spellings this week.

 

Homework: Due to the weather at the end of last week there is no homework due in for this week.

 

Week Commencing 26/02/18

 

English: This week in English, children will be working on our class novel The Enchanted Wood. We will be focussing on chapter 4. On Friday it is World Book Day, and children will be taking part in acivities around the book Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson.

 

Maths: In maths this week we will be focussing on reasoning and mental arithmetic.

 

Spellings: This week, children will be tested on Bronze and Silver spellings.

 

Homework: Over the holidays, children have been asked to create a model of a Stone Age house.

 

Week Commencing 12/02/18

 

English: It is assessment week this week. Children will be completing their reading (part A and B) and SPAG assessments.

 

Maths: We have an exciting week of angles work ahead of us. Children will be identifying different types of angles (acute, obtuse and right) before exploring the environment to hunt for these angles in the real world. 

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Silver spellings this week.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday, children have been given a series of fraction problems to solve using strategies we have learnt in class. 

 

Week Commencing 05/02/18

 

English: This week in English we are having a Cracking Comprehension focus. Children will work together to read and answer questions about a fiction text, thinking about how they can find the information they need to answer a question and how they can use that information to form a detailed answer. They will then complete an independent practice paper using the skills that we have worked on together. They will repeat this process at the end of the week with a non-fiction text. 

 

Maths: This week in maths we will be exploring the relationship between non-unit fractions and the number operations of division and multiplication. Children will be using bar method strategies from last week to help solve division and multiplication number sentences relating to non-unit fraction problems. On Friday, children will complete their maths assessment. 

 

Homework: To be completed by Wednesday. This week children will write their own story in the style of The Stone Age Boy.

 

Spellings: This week children will be tested on unit 7 spellings.

 

Week commencing 29/01/18

 

English: This week the children will be carrying out their unaided writing at the end of this week, using the techniques they learnt last week to write a suspenseful piece. They will begin by collecting vocabulary to help them with their writing. They will then use this vocabulary to build some exciting sentences before improving them with adjectives, adverbs, conjuntions and different openers.

 

Maths: The week we will be looking at fractions of amounts. We will be using concrete and pictorial methods to find unit and non-unit fractions of amounts before moving on to solving fraction problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve maths reasoning problems.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Silver Spellings this Friday.

 

 

Week commencing 22/01/18

 

English: Children will be continuing their rewrite of'Stone Age Boy' from the point of view of Om. This week, we will focus on suspense writing and building tension. We will talk about building events up gradulally using short sentences and suspenseful phrases.

 

Maths: This week we will be focussing on problem solving and reasoning. The children will be learning about and using different key strategies to think about numbers in different ways.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to write about a Stone Age hunting scene using exciting vocabulary.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 6 spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 15/01/18

 

English: This week children will be continuing their work on 'Stone Age Boy'. They will begin by rewriting the story from the point of of Om. The focus will be on using adjectives, powerful verbs and adverbs to describe a scene where Om is showing the boy around her family camp.We will be doing some shared and independent writing this week.

 

Maths: The week we will begin to look at fractions by identifying what halves, quarters, thirds and eighths are and understanding what they could represent.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to divide numbers using the bar method.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Unit spellings this week.

 

 

Week commencing 08/01/18

 

Happy new year! Welcome back, I hope everyone has had a fantastic break and is ready for the new term.

 

English: Children will begin their work on the book 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. They will begin the week by making predictions about the story using the front cover and blurd for clues. We will read the book and sequence the events in the story before thinking about the thoughts of the characters. 

 

Maths: This week, we will be dividing larger numbers by using Numicon and counters before moving on to applying this to the bar method of division.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday. We will then be sending out the Silver spellings which we will begin testing from next week.

 

Week Commencing 11/12/17

 

English - This week is assessment week. Children will be carrying out Reading Part 1 and 2 as well as Spelling and Grammar. 

 

Maths - Children will be carrying out their Maths assessment this week. 

 

Homework - To be completed by Wednesday, children have been given a variety of mathematical problems to solve. 

 

Week Commencing 04/12/17

 

English: This week we are continuing our work on instruction writing. We will be writing and improving a set of instructions about decorating a biscuit, before planning and writing a set of instructions about making our danglies - which we will be doing on Monday afternoon.

 

Maths: In maths we will finish off our work on usng the grid method to multiply large numbers before moving on to division. Will will first look at dividing by grouping using counters and then move onto to solving division problems using Numicon.

 

Homework: To be in by Wednesday. Homework this week is to re-write a set of instructions in chronological order, remembering to include time phrases.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on bronze spellings this week.

 

Week commencing 27/11/17

 

English: This week we will begin looking at instruction texts. We will begin by looking at a variety of instructions and identifying th features. Then, children will be making iced biscuits which they will write their own instructions for later in the week.

 

Maths: This week, we will be continuing our work on multiplication and children will be using the grid method to solve multiplication questions with two and three digit numbers.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children have been given multiplication questions to solve using the grid method, this is in preperation for our maths lessons this week.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 3 spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 20/11/17

 

English: This week, children will be writing their own version of the Billy's Bucket, which we have called Rosie's Rucksack. They will continue working on the rules of writing speech before applying them to their own story.

 

Maths: This week, children will be focusing on times tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10) and will also be solving times table problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to add the correct speech punctuation to given sentences.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 13/11/17

 

English: This week children will be learning the rules of writing speech. They will then use the story of Billy's Bucket and write their own version which includes speech.

 

Maths: This week, children will be using their addition and subtraction knowledge to solve word problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to solve subtraction calculations.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Unit 4 spellings on Friday.

 

Week commencing 06/11/17

 

English: Children will be looking at the story of "Billy's Bucket". They will learn the story and role play scenes, before creating and looking at a story map.

 

Maths: This week, children will be subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers using the partitioning method. The children will then move on to looking at addition and subtraction as inverse operations and using this to find missing numbers in addition and subtraction problems.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to use conjunctions to create compound sentences.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings on Friday.

 

Week Commencing 30/10/17

 

English: This week in English we are going back to basics, focussing on sentence formation, full stops and capital letters and letter formation.

 

Maths: This week is all about shape. We will begin the week looking at basic 2 dimensional shapes and their properties, thinking about vertices and sides - parallel and opposites, before moving on to quadrillaterals such as the rhombus, parallelogram and kite. We will end the week by beginning to look at 3 dimensional shapes and making our own.

 

Week Commencing 16/10/17

 

We are having an assessment week this week. Children will complete reading, spelling, grammar, and maths assessments as well as editing their unaided writing from last week.

 

Week commencing 09/10/17

 

English: Children will be using their haunted houses to complete their unaided writing. They will need to remember to use adjectives, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions which they have learnt about in the previous weeks.

 

Maths: This week we will be concentrating on subtraction. Children will begin the week by mentally subtracting one digit numbers from two and three digit numbers, then we will move on to subtracting multiples of 10. Towards the end of the week, children will be subtracting two and three digit numbers using a number line.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children should solve addition problems using the partitioning method that they have been taught.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spelling set on Friday.

 

Week Commencing 02/10/17

 

English: Children will be continuing their work on story settings, this week moving on to describing a park setting. They will be collecting verbs and adverbs to use in their writing towards the end of the week, remembering to include adjectives and positional prepositions from the previous weeks' learning as well. A trip to the park this weekend would be really helpful! You can discuss with your child what they can see, hear, smell and feel whilst you are there.

 

Maths: Children will be focusing on addition this week. They will begin by using a number line to add two and three digit numbers before moving on to addition using partitioning.

 

Homework: Due in by Wednesday this week. Children are to read a setting description and draw what is being described.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spelling set on Friday.

 

Week Commencing 25/09/17

 

English: This week we will continue our work on story settings. Children will begin the week by going outside and thinking about vocabulary to describe a woodland setting. Then, using the vocabulary that they have collected, children will write their own sentences using positional prepositions before improving them and writing a full descriptive paragraph.

 

Maths: Children will begin the week by finding 10 more or less than a 3 digit number, using Base 10 to help. Later in the week children will move on to adding single digit numbers to a 2 or 3 digit number. They will end the week by adding multiples of 10 to a 2 digit number.

 

Homework: To be in by Wednesday children should complete the sheet, recognising the value of digits in a three digit number and building 3 digit numbers using number sentences.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on Oxford Owl Unit 1 Spellings this week.

 

Week commencing 18/09/17

 

English: This week we will start our work on story settings. The children will use picture clues to identify different settings before discussing why a setting is important to a story. We will think about the different features that writers use to make a setting really come alive when we read about it.They will collect expanded noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun e.g. grand, towering tree) to use in a short descriptive paragraph about a castle setting.

 

Maths: Children will be continuing their work on place value.  They will be reading and writing numbers up to 1000, comparing and ordering different numbers as well as estimating where numbers can be placed on numberlines. Later in the week the children will be counting in multiples of 50 and 100.

 

Homework:  Due in by Wednesday. Children are to rewrite sentences to correctly include capital letters and full stops.

 

Spellings: Children will be tested on the Bronze spellings which were sent home with homework last week. 

 

Week commencing 11/09/17

 

English: Children will be learning about when to use capital letters and full stops in a sentence and will also be writing a recount about our trip to Cannon Hall Farm!

 

Maths: This week the children will begin their work on place value, beginning with representing numbers using Base 10 equipment. They will then move on identifying the value of each digit in two and three digit numbers as well as partioning numbers to understand how they are constructed.

 

Homework:  Due in by Wednesday, children are to draw a picture and write some sentences describing their first week at Bywell.

 

Week Commencing 04/09/17

 

This week we will all be spending some time getting to know each other. Children will be learning new routines and finding their feet inside and out of class. We will be doing lots of different activities to get settled in and children will be showing off what they already know!
