This Half Term's Learning

Spring 1

In our Maths lessons we will continue with our learning about multiplication and division. We will investigate factor pairs, how to multiply and divide by 10, 100  and how to multiply up to 3 digit numbers by 1 digit in a formal method.

In English lessons we will introduce a new poetry unit based on the amazing poem, ‘Still I Rise‘ by Maya Angelou.  We will then begin a narrative unit based on the classic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘ by Roald Dahl.

In RE lessons we will look at the qualities needed to be an inspirational leader.

In History our new theme will be based on Vikings. We will look at the Viking way of life, food, games how we know the Vikings came to this country.

In Geography we will find out about climate zones and biomes, in particular we will focus on The Amazon and Antarctica.

In PE we are developing skills with our partners ‘Beyond the Physical.’  Our focus this term is ‘Inspire, Create and Perform’ , using a range of equipment to develop skills for sports.

Thank you for your continued support with spellings and times tables- the whole year group is making fantastic progress- well done!

Physical Education

Our PE Days are:

  • Tuesday (Indoor)
  • Friday (Outdoor)

Our PE day has been changed to Thursday to facilitate some external coaching.

On these days, your child may come to school in their PE kit: plain white  T shirt, black shorts or joggers and plain black trainers. A plain black hooded jacket may also be worn.

Jewellery is not permitted for safety.

Keep active: try a 5 minute workout with Joe Wicks.

Spring Term Timetables

Times Tables

All children in Year 4 must learn their multiplication tables. In July there is a National Multiplication Tables Check. All children in Year 4 are encouraged to learn all of their multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.

To enable this, we will be working our way up the times table ladder each week. You will receive a weekly PING to tell you of your child’s achievements and what to learn at home next. Times table books must be returned to school for our weekly test each Thursday.

TTROCKSTARS: this is a brilliant program to encourage times tables practise. It is recommended to complete 21 minutes of GARAGE each week to develop multiplication fluency in the Autumn Term.

All children have a login and are encouraged to use it as often as they can.

Year 4 Curriculum

Writing

We use Jane Considine’s ‘The Write Stuff’ as a basis for our writing. The Writing Rainbow helps us during our sentence stacking and independent writing.

Reading

We love reading in Year 4.

Here is a link to some recommended reads for Year 4 .https://www.thereaderteacher.com/year4

Every child has a reading book and a book they have chosen from our fabulous library.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr Suess.

Reading daily is essential

Spelling

Spellings: This year we will be using  Ninja Spelling resources. Each week we will distribute 10 spellings.

We will practise them in school and then test on Thursday.

Please ensure that your spelling book is back in school in time for the test on Thursday each week.
